Cake Pop Tutorial

Cake Pop Tutorial

Cake pops - cupcakes for the future generation. Ever wish you could put a coated cupcake on a stick? Well, obviously somebody else did too, thus the invention of the cake pop. Cake pops are great, because you can really do just about anything with them! Use your favorite cake, frosting and coating to create this delectable treat. I used a marble cake, mixed with vanilla frosting and coated with peanut butter to make my cake pops, but it's fun to experiment with whatever you like the best!

Ingredients:

1 box cake mix (Fudge Marble used here)
1/2 can of frosting (vanilla - my go to)
1 pkg lollipop sticks
1 pkg Wilton baking melts (I used peanut butter flavored)
1 shaker of assorted sprinkles

Directions:

Prepare cake as directed on box
Once cake is done baking set aside to cool (you can even pop it in the fridge for a bit to speed up the process)
Now that your cake has cooled, mix in 1/2 can of frosting. This part can get messy, but that's the point.
Roll cake mixture into round balls about the size of a donut hole. (If you've added too much frosting, or your cake is too sticky to roll, put it in the fridge for about 20 minutes to let it solidify)
Insert popsicles sticks in center of each ball, deep enough to create a firm base for the cake pop.
Melt baking melts in small bowl according to package directions, but most importantly make sure to set your microwave to MEDIUM heat!!! Otherwise, the melts will burn. Melt in 30 second increments until smooth. !Caution bowl will be very hot!
Proceeding with one cake pop at a time, dip pop in baking melt mixture, covering completely (don't worry about the very bottom near the stick). Use the back side of a spoon to smooth out the coating and to remove any excess that might drip down.
Immediately shake sprinkles over coated cake pop. The coating dries quickly so there's a small window of opportunity to get your sprinkles to stick. This would also be the prime time to apply any other decorations to your cake pop. If your notice the melted coating beginning to thicken, place bowl back in the microwave for another 30 seconds on medium.
Stick cake pop in styrofoam base, and allow to dry.
Repeat for each cake pop until you have an army of delicious cake popping goodness.
